Hello friends and HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY! Today we are celebrating all ladies around the world – shout out to you for being AMAZING! International Women’s Day is all about empowerment and recognition of some of the amazing achievements of Women so we thought today we would interview none other than Jane Hutcherson. Jane is not only one of the owners of the Freshwater Farm property, she is also our Finance Director. Jane is also a Co-Director of Soap Solutions, the manufacturing side of our business where we make all of the our beautiful products on the Northern Beaches.

Jane please tell us a little bit about yourself?

Hi I am Jane and I am all about style, heath and the beach lifestyle! These elements have all helped to shape Freshwater Farm, to create a brand that is a true reflection our values and vision, which I believe makes us so unique. I am a mother of 2 and a grandmother of 5 and it gives me great pleasure watching the next generation become more and more involved in our brand. I lead an enormously busy life but it’s all worth while getting to play a role in such a successful brand.

What inspired you to begin in the personal care industry?

My husband, Al, had wanted to buy a soap plant in 1993. To be quite honest at first I did not think it was a very good idea haha…I said what on earth are we going to do with that! As I mentioned I have always been interested in Health and Wellbeing so I guess I took this an opportunity to use my knowledge in those areas to ensure we create products that align with what I believe are genuinely good for people. We agreed that if we were to start making soap we wanted to do it right. I think in the past there has been a real gap in the market for what I believe to be high quality personal care that is ethically manufactured in Australia, I wanted to change this. This motivated us to ensure our products would be environmentally friendly and made with high quality, well researched ingredients right here in Australia.

How has Freshwater Farm changed since you first began?

The Freshwater Farm brand itself developed in 2018 and was inspired by our recently purchased Farm on the Mid-North Coast. On the Farm already there was existing an Tea Tree and Lemon Scented Tea Tree plantation. Since then we have planted Lemon Myrtle and started producing Manuka Honey from bees feeding on the Lemon Scented Tea Tree. It brings me great pleasure seeing all of the beautiful ingredients from the farm that we worked so hard to nurture and grow actually be used in our own products. I love knowing exactly what goes into the products we make because we have created the ingredients ourselves. I am so proud of the high quality look and feel we have achieved.

What is your favourite thing about Freshwater Farm as a brand?

My favourite part about the brand is reading all of the wonderful feedback from customers about the products. It’s such a great feeling when people really appreciate what you believe in and worked so hard to achieve. It’s been amazing being able to tell our story and have people really resonate with us and our products. I really think people can tell the difference with Freshwater Farm because you can feel all of devotion and hard work that goes in everyday. It wasn’t easy to get to where we are and I think people really appreciate that and want to be part of building the story.

What is your best piece of advice for any women wanting to start her own business?

I think my best piece of advice is finding a blend. I think you always need to bring your own blend of values into everything you do so that is has a soul and represents who you are. People will always gravitate to what is genuine and there is no better way to do that than bring your own personal touch. I managed to find a blend between what’s important to me – my family, career, health and vitality – and I brought all of these with me into Freshwater Farm.

Thank you so much for your time Jane!

We hope you enjoyed this special interview. Let us know if you have anymore questions for Jane!

Lots of love,

Freshwater Farm xo

Hi everyone! Today we thought it would be nice to get a bit more personal and introduce some of our team. Over this year we hope to introduce you to more of the Freshwater Farm family so you can learn more about us as people!

There’s no better way to kick this off than with our Technical Manager, Wilson, who is in charge of laboratory at Freshwater Farm. Wilson’s job along with his team involves creating and perfecting all of our amazing products at Freshwater Farm. This includes designing formulas, sourcing only the best ingredients, testing products for safety and performance and ensuring our product quality remains top standard.

To begin tell us a little bit about yourself Wilson?

I love the outdoors and going on hikes and exploring different national parks. That being said, I’m about to go out camping for the first time ever at the age of 24, hahah! Basketball has been with me since primary school and a hobby I lean on regularly to clear my mind and keep fit.

What inspired you to be a Technical Manager?

After my time here as an intern in 2018, I became fascinated with the idea of taking an idea of a product to the shelves of a supermarket and the homes of consumers. Products that are great value and loved by the people that use them. On the other hand, I also saw this as an opportunity to make an impact on the industry from a sustainable manufacturing point of view which I’ll continue to carry and build on, the more we grow and expand our capabilities.

What is favourite part of your job?

Favourite thing would be watching project briefs turn into products on shelves, picking something up in a store knowing the work we put in to get it there is a great feeling.

What is your favourite sustainability hack?

Not necessarily a hack but the one thing that was a game changer for me was actually installing and using a compost bin, directly reducing the waste that ends up in landfill. Otherwise it’s literally bringing a water bottle with me everywhere I go, all day every day.

What is your favourite Freshwater Farm product?

Hemp Seed Oil Conditioner – in a nutshell, this little 70g bar represents everything we strive to achieve in our tech team – innovative, sustainable, functional

Thanks very much for your time Wilson!

We hope you enjoyed reading more about our team and what we are all about at Freshwater Farm. Let us know if you have any more questions for Wilson! Who would you like us to interview next?

Lots of love,

Freshwater Farm xo

Hello friends, we hope you had a wonderful Christmas and New Year! If you’re a Northern Beaches local like us, it’s been a very strange festive season but we are pushing through it and making the most of the downtime! What have you been doing to keep busy and healthy lately?

Today we wanted to sit down and chat…well type…about our soap and hand wash making methods. Everything about our products from the ingredients selected to the manufacturing and the packaging is done carefully and with purpose. We thought it might be nice to really go into detail about some of the methods we use when making our products and why we choose to make them this way.

TRIPLE MILLED SOAP

You may have noticed on our body bar packaging the words Triple Milled but what exactly does this mean? Triple Milling is a traditional process of making soap that, as the name suggests, involves milling the soap through a set of large rollers 3 times. As you can see in the pictures below the soap noodle is pressed into smooth and flat strings ready to be heat pressed into a bar. Not only does the Triple Mill process result in a high-quality product, it actually helps the soap to keep its shape and last longer because it contains less water. This is one of the reasons why our body bars are renowned for being so long lasting and never ever turn into a sticky blob in the shower (which you will find with non-triple milled soaps).

Before Triple Milling
After Triple Milling

Another reason why the Triple Mill process is so key to our products is because of the essential oils we use. The Triple Mill process allows the oils to be distributed evenly through the soap bar so that even when you reach the end of the product you still have a beautifully fragrant bar that contains all of the beneficial ingredients inside.

The Triple Mill process also possesses a number of benefits for the skin. It creates a creamier and richer lather which results in noticeably smoother and softer skin. The Triple Mill process is much more suitable to sensitive skin types, as it helps to rid of stubborn oil or dirt that remains on the skin.

Each of our Body Bars are Triple Milled with the skin softening emollients of Australian Olive Oil and Organic Shea Butter to help nourish the skin.

CASTILE HAND WASH

You may have noticed on our Hand Washes the word Castile. Castile is a very special type of liquid soap that is made from a plant-based soap base of coconut and olive oils. Not only is Castile soap vegan friendly but it is also amazing for the skin. Castile soap is extremely gentle on sensitive skin because it is made from natural ingredients. It is very hydrating and helps to replenish moisture to the skin using the natural fats from the olive and coconut oils. Castile soap also contains glycerin which helps to absorb moisture from the environment to keep your skin hydrated and glowing.

Olive Oil
Coconut

Castile does not strip your skin of its natural oils and helps to unblock pores by encouraging the skin to remove dead skin cells. Being made from Olive and Coconut Oils, Castile is naturally rich in anti-oxidants and vitamins which help to protect and repair the skin cells from sun damage reducing signs of aging.

As you can see Castile Soap is not just a great soap alternative for those following a plant based lifestyle but provides some wonderful benefits for everyone! We use the Castile Soap method in all of our liquid hand washes.

Olive Oil

We hope you enjoyed reading more about our methods for making our products. Feel free to ask any questions below if you would like to learn more!

Have a wonderful week!

Our household waste increases A LOT around Christmas. Keep our planet happy and indulge this Christmas sustainably. Here are a few ideas on how you can do so!

1 – GO NATURAL

The fewer products you purchase that contain chemicals and nasty’s, the fewer chemicals go down the drain. By incorporating natural products into your day to day routine, you’re reducing the risk of water pollution and playing your part in keeping our environment thriving and happy. Give someone a gift that makes them feel good about themselves with natural products!

Our Lemon Myrtle Oil + Manuka Honey Castile Hand Wash is a perfect example with 100% naturally derived ingredients and proudly Australian made. We absolutely love the refreshing scent in every spurt; treat your loved one to this luxurious product and transform washing your hands into an experience.

2 – REDUCE YOUR FOOD WASTAGE

Did you know that the average food wastage bill in Australia sits at $20 billion a year? And as a nation, we waste 7.3 million tonnes of food each year? This makes Australia the world’s fourth highest food waster per capital (Ozharvest.com.au).

Food Wastage effects everything – Water, Land, Money, Labour and Energy. For Christmas this year we can not only show our friends and family love, but our planet too.

A few ways you can do this, is by:

  • Use up all your food in your freezer prior to Christmas, freeing up extra space for new leftovers
  • Shop with a list & Plan your meals – Christmas shopping can sometimes be overwhelming. Get your ideas onto paper and create yourself a meal planner or shopping list
  • Turn your leftovers into something yummy; if you’ve run out of ideas, go to Oz Harvest and check out to get some ‘Wasty Recipes’

3 – DONATE ANY UNWANTED GIFTS & FOOD:

Christmas is a time for giving and spending time with your loved ones. However, for those who are doing it tough, Christmas can be extremely isolating. This year in particular with the COVID-19 Pandemic, it’s more important than ever to look out for one another and support those who need it most. Why not this year, replace the traditional gift giving and donate your gifts to charity.

Have you been gifted something that just isn’t right for you? Have you got an excess of leftover food? Here are a few different charities playing their part, to help you play yours, to give back this year!!

  • The Salvation Army provides sources for donation of both gifts and food. Every year the Smith family donate 64,000 hampers and vouchers; as well as 160,000 meals to families and individuals in need. By contributing to this cause, you are enabling a family to experience a warmer and more fulfilled Christmas.
  • Another charity supporting this idea of Donating gifts this year is The Smith Family. ‘The Toy and Book’ appeal is your opportunity to bring Christmas to life and put a smile on those children who are disadvantaged. There are a number of ways you can do this- whether it be making a donation, purchasing a gift from their online Charity gift catalogue or volunteering your time.
  • World Vision are also on board, and recognise this importance of the festive season and giving back. Make your mark across the world and ensure children and youth have access to quality education or help to protect children affected by the Indonesian earthquake and tsunami crisis. Want to keep things local and in the country? Support Indigenous Australians with their literacy and numeracy- your $50 donation will go towards resources for children in playgroup sessions.

4 – SUPPORT LOCAL AUSTRALIAN BUSINESSES:

COVID-19 has impacted the entire world – it has changed up the way we live our day-to-day lives – not to mention how we celebrate with our family and friends. It’s been a tough year for small businesses with many having to close over the lockdown period losing countless sales and customers. This year for Christmas, why not explore the idea of supporting local Australian businesses to help them get back on their feet. The following are a few ways you can do so:

  • Feasting Locally: Support local Aussie farmers and source your fruit and veg for your Christmas lunch or dinner through local producers. This could be by going to your local butcher, farmers markets or sourcing Australian wines.
  • Organise a Kris Kringle: whether that be with your family or between your friends – add the challenge of only gifting Australian made products. Set a centralised budget and you’re good to go!
  • Instead of a physical gift, gift an experience. Take the family down to the National Park or treat mum to a weekend away at an Australian Winery.
  • A gift for someone who already has everything: something for the garden. Make an outing out of it and head to your local nursery, go to your local farmers market or even a local arts and crafts centre and buy that special someone in your life; something they are able to nurture and watch grow over the Christmas period and beyond.

Sharing all these experiences and brands online through your socials media such as Instagram, Facebook and Twitter is totally free of charge and an awesome way that you can continue to support and help local Aussie businesses thrive. If you have a great experience with a brand why not share it! This will not only be great exposure for the brand but will help other customers like you to find great Australian products!

5 – THINK SOLAR POWER:

Traditionally the house that was covered in the most Christmas lights, was considered to be the best and would draw the attention of families and crowds from the streets. However, times have changed, and with the cost of electricity continuously increasing – not only is it a waste of natural resources, but also impacts our environment tremendously.

This year, consider things such as:

  • Reducing the size of your outdoor displays
  • Set time limits to when you turn your Christmas lights on and off, as opposed to leaving them on all night and day
  • Use LED Lights: LED use up to 95% less energy than other traditional styled bulbs
  • Solar Powered Christmas lights are a good way of using natural sunlight to light up your house and save your electricity bills

We hope you enjoyed these helpful tips for enjoying Christmas sustainably! What changes will you make in your home?

Lots of love Freshwater Farm xx

Overwhelmed with city life? Need an escape? Let us take you on a journey to Freshwater Farm and keep you updated with all our new and exciting news about what’s been happening around the Farm.

The Farm has been a great place for our family to getaway to amidst the pandemic madness! We are truly lucky we have somewhere nearby we can visit. It feels a little like a holiday, that we have all been craving!

Being a family owned and run business gives us the liberty to be able to combine both worlds. We value our family time and have strived to make the farm a place of tranquillity, that we are able to escape to whenever the city gets the better of us. We now have a new Pontoon on the dam! Grant and Al both worked very hard to put this together, so that the kids and everyone who visits the farm can swim safely…and for those don’t like to touch the mud!

Next we wanted to start building up the ecosystem at the Farm by adding some Freshwater Yabbies & Glass Shrimp to our creek. We want our farm to be a wildlife sanctuary where the the kids can learn more about the animals and the animals will be safe!

Freshwater Yabbies enjoy muddy water because it offers protection from predators, they can be found in a variety of habitats including swaps, farm dams and billabongs. Whilst they prefer warmer waters, Yabbies can actually survive in vast range of temps from freezing to around 35°C. If drought occurs then Yabbies will bury themselves underground for many years until it passes – they are true Aussie outbackers! Interestingly, Yabbies are not well understood by scientists, often a dry empty lake that is again filled with rainwater will become richly populated with Yabbies in a short period of time and no one seems to know how!

Some other new additions to the Freshwater Farm ecosystem were some gorgeous baby ducklings! These ducklings and their Mum are Chestnut Teal Ducks native to Australia. They were also enjoying the serenity of the dam when we snapped this adorable shot! Interestingly the breeding season for ducklings is usually between July & September however due to the changes in weather with slightly warmer temperatures, this could be why we are seeing many duckies about now!

Ducks are said to return to the same nesting spot year after year so long as the conditions stay suitable for nesting, so with a bit of luck we might be seeing some more little fellas this time next year! Ducks for their nest love somewhere private and safe often amongst tall grass or bushes, so we can see why they love the farm for raising their babies!

Ducks aren’t the only babies we will be seeing either…some other friends that will be joining us at the farm are Baby Water Hens. Our recently harvested Tea Tree Plantation has been reshooting and Al very cleverly spotted amongst the new regrowth these eggs! Typically the habitat of a Water Hen involves well-vegetated lakes and marshy environments, so the Tea Tree plantation must have seemed a perfect fit for our soon to be mother. Water Hens are omnivores surviving on a diet of both plants and small animals like insects or even frogs. We can’t wait to meet the little ones!

We hope you enjoyed this fortnights farm update! Let us know what else you would like to hear about on the blog! We will be sure to keep you updated when the Water Hen eggs hatch, take care!

Hi friends, how are we all keeping during these times? What are you doing to stay busy and healthy? We thought we would share with you how our beautiful Lemon Myrtle Oil is made, since so many of you have been LOVING it in our newest body bar, Lemon Myrtle Oil + Manuka Honey.

The first step of course is to gather the fresh Lemon Myrtle! Lemon Myrtle is actually called Backhousia Citriodora, this is the botanical name commonly used in ingredient lists or when referring to the therapeutic properties of the oil. We have an abundance of Lemon Myrtle plantations at our lovely farm on the Mid-North Coast of NSW. We just love the smell of Lemon Myrtle and knew it would be a perfect essential oil to include in our products.

The next step is where the distilling fun begins! Once the Lemon Myrtle has been harvested, it is placed into a large vessel. A second vessel, filled with water, is then heated to produce steam which travels into the vessel containing the Lemon Myrtle plants. The steam will extract the essential oils from the Lemon Myrtle and allow the essential oil molecules to rise to the top of the vessel.

The steam containing the essential oil molecules is then transferred through a cold “condenser.” This cooling will convert the steam back to water, which is moved to a final vessel containing floral water at the bottom and the essential oil at the top. Think of it like Rose Oil and Rosewater, the Rosewater is just less potent with the essential oil.

The Lemon Myrtle Essential Oil is then transported back to our factory on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, to be made into soap for all of you lovely people! We highly recommend trying our Lemon Myrtle + Manuka Honey Body Bar, the smell is just gorgeous and not to mention Lemon Myrtle is extremely beneficial to the skin with antioxidants, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties.

We hope you enjoyed this little insight into how we craft our products! Do you have a favourite essential oil? Comment below!

Hello!! Shoutout to all of our eco friendly earth loving friends!

If you’re looking for a few tips to help you lead a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, this is the perfect article for you! These tips are simple and easy changes we can ALL make to our lives to help look after our planet.

LOOK FOR NATURALLY DERIVED PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS

Think about it, any chemicals or nasties in your personal care products end up flowing straight from your drain into the ocean. This is extremely harmful to marine eco systems and especially coral reefs which are the main provider of oxygen to our earth! Check out our Body Bars and Washes which are 100% naturally derived!

BE PACKAGING CONSCIOUS

Try look out for items with reusable or recyclable packaging. This is a small way you can reduce your impact on the earth by minimising the waste you leave. For example if you forget your water bottle and you have to buy one on the go, try opting for a cardboard or glass packaged water. Our Shampoo and Conditioner Bars are also a great way to do to reduce waste. They come in a fully biodegradable and recyclable packaging instead of a plastic bottle like a regular liquid shampoo. They are also made with around 68% less water than a liquid formula!

SWITCH OFF THE WATER WHILE YOU LATHER

Cut down on your water wastage by turning off the water in the shower whilst you lather soap on your body and apply shampoo or conditioner. Switching off the water flow for even a minute can make a world of difference.

CUT DOWN ON ANIMAL PRODUCTS

The animal farming industry is one of the largest contributors to water waste and green house gas emissions, in fact according to some studies it produces more green house gas than all the planes, cars, trucks and ships combined WORLDWIDE. Following a plant based lifestyle is not only better for our planet but better for your body and health. Eating a plant based diet will reduce your risk of heart disease by lowering your cholesterol significantly and improving your energy levels. We understand that changing to a completely Vegan diet can be challenging so even choosing a couple days a week to follow this diet can make a big difference. You can also opt for Vegan friendly skin and body care products. We have a large selection of Vegan products at Freshwater Farm.

BRING YOUR OWN

This one is super super easy to do but will have such a huge impact! Bring your own reusables when you are eating or drinking out to reduce the waste you create. This includes (but is of course not limited to) items such as metal straws, keep cups, wooden utensils and reusable shopping bags. You can find all of these items at a wide range of stores including Woolworths and Coles. Keep these items in your bag for use on the go and that way you can say no that plastic fork for your lunch or the paper cup for your morning coffee!

We hope these tips can help you to reduce your eco footprint. What changes have you made to your lifestyle to be more eco friendly? Share your top tips in the comments below!

Hello beautiful friends, welcome back to our blog!

You may have seen them on the website already but we just wanted to make sure EVERYONE knows about our newest product…Shampoo and Conditioner Bars! We are so so proud of these and we can’t wait for you all to try them!

These little guys are amazing, they are super hydrating and packed with essential oils which will cleanse and nourish your hair. Each bar is pH balanced to suit your hair type. We have three variants available to make sure we take of you and your individual hair types needs!

The Shampoo Bars come in a 100g size and the Conditioner Bars are 70g. These bars are amazing value and last you much longer than a liquid formula, it’s much more cost efficient. The average liquid Shampoo is made from 80% WATER, where as a Shampoo Bar is highly concentrated and is less than 12% water! Imagine paying for “Shampoo” that is mostly just water in a fancy plastic bottle…ridiculous! Speaking of, unlike plastic bottles, these bars are packed in a fully recyclable and biodegradable package! #ecofriendly

If you suffer from dry scalp conditions I strongly recommend you try the Hemp Seed Oil Hydrating Shampoo Bar and the matching Conditioner Bar. Firstly hemp seed oil smells incredible, super refreshing, but it also helps to stimulate your hair growth! The secret ingredient is the Neem Oil and Karanja Seed Extract which help to relieve sensitive and itchy scalps.

If you are anything like me and you straighten or blow dry your hair far too often or maybe your hair is more on the frizzy side, you must try the Mandarin + Cedarwood Strengthening Shampoo Bar and matching Conditioner Bar. The smell is so sweet and spicy at the same time! The secret ingredient in this bar is the Hydrolysed Oats which bring back life and strength to your hair. The combo of Shea Butter, Coconut Oil and Cocoa Butter will leave your hair silky and smooth.

For those lucky enough to have simple normal hair, your match is the Rosewater Cleansing Shampoo Bar and the Moisturising Conditioner Bar. Rosewater is traditional yet beautiful and will help to thoroughly wash and cleanse your hair. The addition of coconut oil and olive oil will moisturise your hair and scalp.

MY TOP TIPS FOR USE

Using these bars is a little different than a traditional Shampoo or Conditioner so these are my recommendations:

– Make sure you store your bars away from direct water flow. If you want your bars to last a long time don’t let them get too wet when you’re not using them.

– Ensure your hair is properly wet! I find if my hair is not wet enough it will not massage into my hair as well because remember, this formula doesn’t contain nearly as much as water as normal shampoo does!

– To apply the Shampoo, first lather the bar in your hands as you would with a bar of soap then massage the product into the hair with your hands, starting at the roots and working downwards.

– To apply the Conditioner, warm the bar in your hands with water until the bar softens and a smooth cream forms. Use your fingers or a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair with the conditioner in.

Want to learn more about using this amazing product? Watch our “how to use” tutorial video below!

We can’t wait to hear your thoughts on our new Shampoo and Conditioner Bars, we really think you will LOVE them! Comment below if you have any questions! What scents should we make next?

Hello Freshwater Farm Blog, how are you today?

Having a nice hot bath is the ULTIMATE way to relax and unwind and we want to show you how to do it right! These are our top 5 must have items for the perfect luxury bath.

CANDLES

Candles are an obvious must for a luxury bath! They always seem to create such calming atmosphere. Pick your favourite scent, light the candles once the bath is run and arrange them around the tub. Lavender is the perfect scent for relaxation or try a citrus blend to clear the mind. Peppermint is also great for stress!

WOODEN BATH TABLE

A wooden table that runs over the top of the tub is a great way to take your bath time to the next level. It can be used to hold your favourite bath products, a hand towel, a book or even a glass of wine. 😜 You can buy a table like this in many homeware stores but if you want to save some money buy a wooden panel (a floor board/deck panel) from a DIY or Hardware store like Bunnings, have it cut to the width of your tub and ta dah you have a bath table ready to go!

FRESHWATER FARM BODY BARS

Now of course we had to throw in at least one of our products in here but I really do mean it when I say our Freshwater Farm Body Bars are truly a luxury bath must have item! They are available in so many stunning scents which will ensure you feel relaxed and refreshed. These body bars also produce the creamiest lather, making your skin feel super nourished and soft.

EXFOLIATOR

An exfoliator is the perfect addition for a luxury bath. Removing all of that dead skin away and revealing the new smooth skin below is such a lush feeling. Those with normal skin types should exfoliate around 3 or 4 times a week. Exfoliators come in many forms including a pumice block/stone, body scrubs, exfoliating mitts and exfoliating soap bars like our delicious Coffee Polishing Body Bar.

BUBBLE BATH MIXTURE

Finally, adding bubbles is the final step for that perfect luxury bath! Add a generous pour of your favourite bubble bath mix whilst the water is still running and watch those bubbles form. If you don’t have any bubble bath around you can also use a few pumps your favourite liquid wash to create a beautiful scent and give the water that smooth feel.

We hope these items help you to have the most indulging bath time EVER! Comment below your favourite way to relax!
